Vancouver with kids
Vancouver in Summer with Kids: Beaches, Pools and Long Evenings
Summer is Vancouver's reward for the rain: warm, dry days, the sun setting after 9pm, beaches all around the city and the mountains open for hiking and gondola rides.
This 3-day plan mixes beaches, a big outdoor pool and the North Shore. Summer is peak season, so book the big attractions ahead and check each official website for hours.
Day 1 · Beaches and Kits Pool
Kitsilano's beach and pool, then sunset at English Bay.
-
Morning
Kitsilano Pool (opens Google Maps)
A huge heated saltwater pool right on the beach, with a shallow end for little ones. In 2026 swim sessions were booked online a few days ahead: check the Park Board's site.
-
Lunch · Lunch
Lunch on West 4th Avenue
Cafés and bakeries a few blocks up from the beach.
-
Afternoon
Kits Beach playground and sand (opens Google Maps)
A playground, volleyball courts and a sandy beach with lifeguards in summer.
-
Evening
Sunset at English Bay (opens Google Maps)
Long summer evenings, driftwood logs to sit on and the sun setting over the water.
Day 2 · Stanley Park by bike
The seawall loop, Second Beach and a spray park.
-
Morning
Seawall by bike (opens Google Maps)
Rent bikes, tag-alongs or trailers near the park entrance and ride the seawall loop (one way, counter-clockwise for bikes).
-
Lunch · Lunch
Picnic at Second Beach (opens Google Maps)
A sandy beach with a playground; there's also an outdoor pool here in summer.
-

A free spray park near Lumberman's Arch: bring swimsuits. City spray parks were open mid-May to the end of September in 2026.
-
Evening

If the kids still have energy, sea otters and sea lions are a short walk away. Check summer hours.
Day 3 · Mountains and canyons
A gondola ride, lumberjacks and a rainforest canyon.
-
Morning
Grouse Mountain (opens Google Maps)
Ride the Skyride gondola up for views, the lumberjack show and the grizzly bear refuge.
-
Lunch · Lunch
Lunch on the mountain
Cafés at the top, or a picnic with a view.
-
Afternoon
Lynn Canyon (opens Google Maps)
A free suspension bridge and swimming holes. The river is cold and fast in places: swim only in calm, shallow spots and watch kids closely.
-
Evening
SeaBus home (opens Google Maps)
Dinner at Lonsdale Quay, then the SeaBus across the harbour.
Summer events to plan around
- Canada Day (July 1): free festivities at Canada Place and around the city, with fireworks over the harbour.
- Fireworks over English Bay: the Honda Celebration of Light was cancelled for 2026 and replaced by a single free night of fireworks; organisers hope to bring the full event back in 2027. Check before you plan around it.
- The PNE Fair: rides, shows, mini donuts and the SuperDogs, from late August to Labor Day. Playland's rides open earlier, from late May.
- Berry picking: blueberry and strawberry farms in Richmond, Delta and the Fraser Valley open in early summer.
Good to know
- Book the big things: Capilano, Grouse and the aquarium are busiest in July and August.
- Wildfire smoke: some summers bring smoky days; check air quality and keep an indoor backup (see our rainy day guide).
- Water is cold: even in summer the ocean is chilly; the pools are warmer.
- Spray parks everywhere: besides Stanley Park, try Granville Island's water park, Prince Edward Park (near Main Street) and King George Park in Richmond. All are free.
- Kits Beach is the favourite, but parking is hard: come early, or take the bus or bikes.
Make it a game
A Play Your Trip book turns your summer plan into an adventure: every stop a quest with a coin to collect, every place one tap from the map. Vancouver books are coming soon; see how it works.
