5 Days in New York with Kids: a Family Itinerary

Five days lets a family see New York without rushing it. Each day below sticks to one part of the city, has one headline moment, and keeps an afternoon gap for a playground, a nap or a second ice cream.

How to pace five days

Put the most walking early in the trip, while everyone's fresh, and keep one afternoon free. Kids remember small things: the pigeon that stole a pretzel, the subway musician, the carousel. Leave gaps for them to happen.

Rain? Swap any outdoor afternoon for one of the ideas in rainy day NYC with kids.

Questions

What's the best time of year to visit New York with kids?

Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable for walking. December is magical but crowded. Summer is hot, though it brings Coney Island, outdoor movies and long evenings.

Is New York good for kids?

Yes. Beyond the famous sights there are hundreds of playgrounds, free parks, ferries and world-class museums, and the subway itself is an adventure for most kids.
